Volunteer Opportunities

AHED clients often need the help of Volunteers to overcome specific barriers in developing successful enterprises. These volunteers feed skills and expertise into the long term support provided on the ground.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Website development: A local Indigenous clan offering Cultural Consultancy services are seeking someone to help make a website to promote their business. Skills are required in html online forms and CMS or wordpress.

Design and Construction Coordinator : Local land owners in Galiwin'ku want to build some office space and have asked the AHED Project for support to do this. This is an important step for them in establishing a base to operate from, and they are also seeing it as an opportunity to up-skill Yolngu in building and construction that can then be applied to other projects.

We are looking for a volunteer to work with the local land owners to design and construct this building.

Most of the materials for this project will be sourced from the land and by the locals. The material options the land owners are looking at are:

  • Sawn timber (locally grown Cypress), sawn with a portable saw mill which we have here on the Island.
  • Recycled building materials. Currently there are many houses being build by the Government to alleviate the housing crisis and there is a large amount of building materials being left at the local tip.
  • Earth, possibly for earth bags if appropriate

We are looking for a volunteer who has experience in design and construction within a tropical climate and is both familiar and comfortable to work with these resources. The volunteer also needs to be willing to pass on their skills and knowledge to Yolngu people.

The building project will be done in phases, starting with consultation and design with local land owners, gathering materials, and upskilling locals during oversight of construction until completion.
